Hardness is measured in Grains Per Gallon (GPG). That number tells you how much dissolved rock your water system carries per gallon. Above 7 GPG, scale can start forming on fixtures, and heating efficiency begins to drop. Above 10.5 GPG, the threshold the U.S. Geological Survey classifies as very hard water, equipment damage accelerates significantly without continuous treatment.

Each of those GPG readings translates directly to equipment wear rate. Royse City’s water also carries a Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) reading of 504 PPM. TDS measures all dissolved minerals combined, not just the calcium and magnesium that drive hardness.
A 100-room hotel there, pushing 5,000 gallons a day, sends 93,000 grains of hardness through its plumbing daily. That works out to over 13 pounds of dissolved minerals available to precipitate as scale every single day. Over a quarter, that property is exposed to 1,200 pounds of dissolved minerals. That is a continuous mineral load that threatens to accumulate as scale throughout the plumbing system.
Commercial Water Filters vs. Residential Systems

Installing a residential unit in a commercial facility causes immediate failure. The filter media exhaust within days, and building-wide pressure drops.
Flow rate. Residential softeners deliver 7–15 Gallons Per Minute (GPM). Industrial water filtration applications need 15 GPM for small retail and over 37 GPM for heavy use. An undersized unit creates back-pressure that starves downstream equipment of the flow it needs.
Twin-alternating tanks. Every softener has a regeneration cycle. During this process, a bypass valve opens and raw hard water enters the building. A hotel at peak occupancy or a restaurant mid-service cannot absorb that.
Proper commercial water filters use a duplex twin-alternating setup: two resin tanks on one control valve. When Tank A hits capacity, the valve shifts to Tank B instantly. Zero untreated water enters the water system.
Build quality and sizing. Commercial vessels use industrial-grade polymers or epoxy-lined steel. Valves are machined from lead-free brass, with pipe connections running 1–2+ inches in diameter. The sediment filter housings are rated for sustained commercial pressure. An undersized system exhausts its resin mid-shift without triggering any alarm on the control panel.

Food Service and Hospitality
In restaurant kitchens across Rockwall County, ice machines and steam equipment fail years early because nobody sized the filtration system for actual daily output.
Scale builds on ice machine evaporator plates and insulates them from the refrigerant. The compressor runs longer cycles and breaks down ahead of schedule. High chlorine content causes cloudy ice and damages the nickel plating inside the machine. Both trace back to untreated source water.

Pure RO output is slightly acidic and will leach copper from brass fittings. So a culinary system always blends a measured amount of mineral content back in after filtration. This stabilizes the pH, protects equipment internals, and produces balanced feedwater that meets manufacturer specifications. Businesses also save on detergent since filtered water requires lighter chemical doses.
Healthcare and Laboratory Facilities
For medical offices and clinics in DFW, dissolved solids are a clinical problem. Instruments go through autoclave steam cycles that bake mineral deposits onto the tools. Even small residue loads can cause failed sterility tests.

Sizing and Texas Compliance

The NTMWD publishes annual water quality data that shows contaminant levels and hardness readings across its service area. But those figures reflect average plant conditions. Actual hardness at your tap shifts based on which source lakes the district is drawing from. We sample your main line and test for hardness and TDS. Where conditions warrant, we add pH and iron checks. System sizing multiplies that hardness number by peak daily usage to nail down the right grain capacity.
Texas installation requirements. Commercial plumbing requires a licensed Master Plumber and a Plumbing Contractor registration. Water treatment work tied to public supply also requires a Water Supply Protection Specialist endorsement. Michael has held his Master Plumber license since 2010 and carries this endorsement.
The TCEQ requires backflow prevention assemblies at hazard points, tested at installation and annually thereafter. Adding new plumbing connections triggers a mandatory Customer Service Inspection. Operating without that certificate risks utility disconnection.
Signs a Commercial Water System Needs Attention
Sustained pressure drops. A consistent drop across multiple fixtures points to fouled sediment filter housings or compacted resin channeling around the filter media.
White scale returning. Chalky buildup on dishwasher elements or prep surfaces means ion exchange has failed. Resin beads swap hardness minerals for sodium to soften the water. When they stop working, the scale comes back fast.
Continuous draining. A valve stuck in backwash routes untreated water to your equipment while wasting thousands of gallons per day.
Chemical or odor complaints. Chlorine taste or sulfur odors point to exhausted carbon cartridges. Off-flavor ice usually means a failed RO membrane. A failed membrane can test high for TDS even when it looks intact.

Does a commercial water filtration system affect water pressure?
A correctly sized system has no effect on normal operations. Pressure problems almost always trace to fouled filter housings or a system undersized for the facility’s actual daily demand.
How often do commercial water filtration systems need service?
More often than residential, because of the volume processed. Sediment cartridges need replacement every 3–6 months. Carbon cartridges should be swapped every six months to protect downstream RO membranes from chlorine exposure.
