When the sinks in the house work fine but the shower won’t run, the problem is in the shower itself. There are three usual suspects: a shower head clogged with mineral buildup, a tub spout diverter stuck in the wrong position, or a worn cartridge inside the shower valve. If you turn the handle and get little or no water from the spout or the head, the cartridge is the most likely cause, and North Texas hard water wears them out faster.
At a home in Forney, TX, the shower wasn’t getting any water at all, and the homeowner had a hunch the cartridge was to blame. They were right.
What we found
The cartridge inside the shower valve was damaged.
What we did
- Removed the damaged cartridge.
- Installed a new cartridge.
- Tested the shower.
Result
The shower ran the way it should, with no issues.
Questions homeowners ask us
What is a shower cartridge?
It’s the part inside the shower valve, behind the handle, that controls how much water flows and how the hot and cold mix. When you turn the handle, you’re turning the cartridge. Over time its seals wear and minerals build up inside, and it can stick, leak, or stop letting water through.
Why is there no hot water in my shower?
First check another faucet. If there’s no hot water anywhere, the problem is the water heater. If it’s only the shower, look at the cartridge or the anti-scald limit stop on the valve, which can be set so far toward cold that the shower never gets warm.
Can I replace a shower cartridge myself?
Sometimes. You’ll need to shut off the water, identify the exact brand and model, and pull the old cartridge without damaging the valve body. Old cartridges often seize, and forcing one can crack the valve, which turns a part swap into opening the wall. If yours won’t budge, or the valve is old enough that parts are hard to find, that’s the time to call. Here’s a thermostatic shower valve we replaced in Plano when the whole valve needed to go.
